Welcome to Zach Spawn Tutoring!

My math tutoring practice is based on the belief that every student has the makings of a great mathematician. I help students reach their full potential by addressing foundational gaps while supporting with schoolwork. Each session is a lesson designed with each student’s specific needs in mind. I use a variety of teaching methods, including Socratic questioning, tactile/visual manipulatives, and timed engagement/disengagement.

About Me

Hello! I am a private math tutor operating in the greater Baltimore area. I have experience teaching in a classroom setting, small group instruction, and one on one tutoring. I have worked in a variety of educational settings, including DC Public Schools, Baltimore City Schools, and a private math teaching center. I hold a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland, where I honed my math skills. As a student that used to struggle with math and later learned to love it, I believe that every student can become a great mathematician with the right support. I strive to provide that support for every kid I work with, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help each of my students.

When I am not teaching math, I enjoy woodworking, kayaking, hiking and barbecuing. I am also an avid student of history. Through these many interests, I see math as the common thread, whether it’s ensuring precise measurements for woodworking or monitoring cooking temperatures. I believe math is not just a subject you learn in school, but rather a skill you develop to understand the world around you. I aspire to instill this perspective in each of my students, and help them leverage their math abilities for a fulfilling life.

Testimonials

"Zach is exactly what we and our daughter needed out of a math tutor. From the beginning, he has been responsive and proactive with our daughter's math needs. He listens to requests and feedback and plans tutoring sessions based on our daughter's skills. They don't only review homework, but practice new strategies, play fun games, and learn tips and tricks that have clearly aided her in class."

Parent of a student taking Algebra I in Baltimore County Schools

“We are so thankful to have found Zach and only wish we had done so earlier. Working with him has made a huge difference for our son. In addition to being broadly knowledgeable, patient, and a fantastic teacher, Zach is able to quickly and accurately assess our son’s strengths and weaknesses and tailor the tutoring sessions to have the highest impact. He makes very challenging material accessible. We could not recommend him more for anyone looking for a skilled math tutor.”

“We have been using Zach since midway through my boys’ 1st quarter for geometry. He is helpful, conscientious and prepares materials for sessions by checking ahead on the curriculum. He also provides detailed updates after each session regarding their progress. His help has not only improved their knowledge and grades but also their confidence.”

FAQs

  • I can teach students in grades K-12. I am comfortable teaching any level of math from kindergarten level to Calculus I. I also offer SAT prep. I can teach Calculus II however I require advanced notice.

  • I offer both! Prices will vary depending on whether a session is in-person or online.

  • In some circumstances, I can work with multiple kids in a small group setting. For this to work, the kids will need to be roughly the same age, working on similar material in school, and familiar with each other. Please let me know during the initial consultation if this is something you are interested in, and we can work out the details!

  • After each session, I will send a brief progress update describing what your kid worked on, how they did, and what we plan to work on going forward. You are welcome to schedule a half hour parent-tutor conference at any time.

  • The first step is to schedule an initial consultation. This is a 30 minute meeting between you, me and your kid, in which we will work out what we will work on and how I can best support you going forward. From there, you can schedule one hour tutoring sessions at your convenience. The initial consultation is free and there is no obligation to sign up for a tutoring session.

  • Although I do not specialize in these particular subjects, I highly recommend Jessica Bello at Confident Scholars Tutoring. You can learn more at: http://www.confidentscholars.org/
